About the exam & our content
Is Keeleproov the official certificate exam?
No. Keeleproov is independent practice. Our questions, texts and audio are original, written in the style, structure and difficulty of the Estonian language proficiency exam. We are not affiliated with the official examining body, and passing our mocks does not grant a certificate — it prepares you for the real sitting.
Which levels do you cover?
All four exam levels — A2, B1, B2 and C1 — with the exam's four parts: listening, reading, writing and speaking, plus a language-structures practice section.
How does the pass rule work?
Harno grades the exam as a whole: you need at least 60% of the total and no part at zero. Our mocks score each part separately and hold a per-part floor deliberately stricter than the real rule, so you see exactly where you stand.
Is the listening audio like the real exam?
Yes — studio-quality Estonian voices at exam pace, with the real play-count rules, so you practise under authentic conditions.
Do you cover the speaking (oral) exam?
Yes. We provide oral task sets in the exam format so you can rehearse — draw a set, prepare, respond. Speaking is not auto-graded; we give model responses and criteria to self-assess, since spoken performance needs a human.
When is the exam held, and are the dates official?
Session dates are set by the state body. We show the current confirmed 2026 sessions on the exam-day page. Always confirm on the official site before you register.
Are these the real exam questions?
No. Every question is original Keeleproov content, written in the exam's style and to its specification — the official tasks are not published, and reusing them would be unlawful. The exam's structure, fees and session dates are set by the examination commission and can change, so confirm the current rules at harno.ee before you register.
Registering and exam day
How do I register for the exam?
Registration goes through EIS, Harno's exam information system — the official instructions and links are here: harno.ee. Each session opens and closes its own registration window, and places often fill before the deadline. We keep the confirmed dates and closing times on the exam-day page. You cannot register through us: Keeleproov is a practice tool, not an exam centre.
How much does the exam cost?
The proficiency exam is a state exam and sitting it is free, as is the certificate. You only pay for preparation, if you buy it from someone — ours starts with a free mock.
What do I need to bring?
A photo ID and a black or blue ballpoint pen — the paper is written by hand. Dictionaries, phones, notes and any other aid are not allowed, and outside help scores zero for that paper. On a choice item, marking more than one option counts as wrong.
What time does the exam start?
The written part begins at exactly 10.00. Be there 15–20 minutes early: your ID is checked at the door and you are shown to your seat. Anyone who arrives late is not let in, and there is no second slot that day — the next chance is the next session.
How long does the exam take?
The written part runs about two hours at A2 and over three at C1; the exact timetable for each level, part by part, is on the exam-day page. The oral part is on the same day, so plan for the whole day.
When is the oral part?
The oral part starts 15–20 minutes after the written part ends, on the same day. The conversation is recorded and a second marker listens back to it. The recording is standard marking practice, not a sign that something is wrong.
What happens if I don't turn up?
An absence without good reason blocks your next registration for six months. The same block applies if your result is below 45%. If something genuine prevents you from attending, Harno has to be told — the procedure is in the exam information sheet you'll find at harno.ee.
How often can I retake it?
The exam sits several times a year and you can normally try again at the next session — there is no limit on attempts. The only obstacle is the six-month pause above, which follows a result under 45% or an unexcused absence.
Results, certificate and citizenship
When do I get my results?
Results arrive within about 40 days and are visible in eesti.ee and EIS. The result is shown as a percentage: you pass with at least 60% of the total points and no skill scored 0.
Can I appeal the result?
Yes, within 30 days of receiving it. Your written paper is kept and the oral part is recorded, so there is something to review. The appeal procedure is at harno.ee.
Does the certificate expire?
No. The proficiency certificate is valid indefinitely and costs nothing to issue. The body you show it to may require a particular level, though — check which level is expected of you before you register.
Which level should I take?
Take the level that is required of you: for citizenship that is B1. The level required at work depends on the job and is set by the Language Act, so check with your employer or in the act itself. If you're torn between two levels, sit the free mock at both and decide on the result rather than the feeling.
How many candidates pass?
By Harno's 2024 statistics, 10,540 people sat the proficiency exam and 5,470 passed — 51.9%. The gap between levels is wide: A2 70.7%, B1 62.9%, B2 37.9% and C1 28.4%. The higher the level, the more the result rests on preparation, and the less good spoken Estonian alone will carry you.
Is anything different if you are 65 or older?
One thing: an applicant aged 65 or over does not have to sit the writing part of the B1 exam when applying for citizenship. Listening, reading and speaking are taken like everyone else. Our mock lets you pick the parts separately, so you can practise just those three.
Is the language exam the same as the citizenship exam?
No. Citizenship needs two things: Estonian at B1 level, and an exam on the Constitution and the Citizenship Act. That second one is 24 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes, and you need at least 18 right to pass. You can practise both here.
Which exam should I take first if I'm applying for citizenship?
Usually the language exam: B1 takes the longest to prepare for and the result only arrives about 40 days later. Preparing for the Constitution and Citizenship Act exam is shorter, and can be done while you wait. They are separate exams; the application's exact requirements are in the official sources.
Preparing and practising
How long should I prepare?
It depends on where you are now, and a mock answers that more honestly than a guess: sit one and read the result skill by skill. Moving up a whole level usually takes months, not weeks. Lifting one lagging skill close to 60% is considerably faster.
How do I know I'm ready?
Our mock scores by the rule Harno uses: at least 60% overall and no part at 0. When two or three mocks in a row land clearly above that line with no skill trailing, that is as close to readiness as practice can tell you.
Do you teach the language, or only prepare for the exam?
Our job is exam practice: the task types, the time pressure, the marking logic. Explanations and guides come with it to help you see why an answer was wrong, but we don't replace a language course. Keeleproov works best alongside lessons, or after them.
Is the mock timed like the real exam?
Yes. The clock runs as it does in the exam and each part matches that level's timetable. If you want to practise without the time pressure, do single tasks in the question bank, where no clock runs.
How many mocks do I get?
A free account gets a shortened mock at every level. A paid pass makes the mocks and the question bank unlimited, because one run is not enough — repetition is what makes the time pressure familiar. The full comparison shows what each one includes.
Can I practise a single skill on its own?
Yes. Listening, reading, writing and speaking can be chosen separately, so the weakest one can be drilled on purpose. Still sit a couple of whole mocks back to back before the exam, because on the day everything comes at once.
Do the answers come with explanations?
Yes. Every multiple-choice question carries an explanation of why the right answer is right and what made the wrong options look plausible. Writing gets feedback against Harno's criteria, with concrete fixes.
What language are the tasks and instructions in?
The tasks are always in Estonian, as they are in the exam. The language of the site and the instructions is yours to choose: Estonian, Russian, Ukrainian or English. So the exam content stays Estonian while the explanation reaches you in a language you read comfortably.
Plans, payment & access
What's the difference between Free, Essentials and Mastery?
Free (every account): one full-length mock for each level, marked in full — the same paper every time you sit it. Essentials (29–49 €): the full question bank, unlimited mocks drawn fresh from it, studio audio and per-module pass/fail scoring for one level. Mastery (45–79 €): everything in Essentials plus AI writing and speaking feedback, an AI explanation of the answer you actually gave, weak-topic recommendations with practice links, and progress history & analytics. See the full comparison.
How long does access last?
A one-time payment gives access to one chosen level for either one month or three — you pick which pass at checkout. Nothing renews: the pass expires on its own and your account returns to the free plan.
Can I upgrade from Essentials to Mastery?
Yes. If you already hold Essentials for a level, upgrading to Mastery charges only the difference (16–30 €) and keeps your existing expiry date.
What payment methods can I use?
Card, Google Pay and Apple Pay — all through Stripe's secure checkout. We never see or store your card details.
Do you offer refunds?
Every plan unlocks digital content immediately. At checkout you agree that access begins at once and that you therefore waive the 14-day right of withdrawal for digital content, so once you've accessed any paid content the purchase is non-refundable. If you have not accessed any paid content, you can request a full refund within 14 days at contact@keeleproov.com. Full details are in our Terms.
Your account & feedback
Is the AI writing feedback an official grade?
No — it's an estimate to guide practice. It rates your writing against Harno's criteria (task realisation, text structure, range of expression and accuracy) on our own point scale and suggests concrete fixes, but only a real examiner grades the official exam. Treat it as coaching, not a verdict.
What happens to the text I write for AI marking?
We keep it for 90 days next to the score it earned, so you can reread it on your profile page — and delete it there in one click, immediately, whenever you want. Speaking is different: the recording is never stored at all, only the transcript the assessor marked, under the same 90 days. Details are in our Privacy Policy.
Is my data private (GDPR)?
We store only what runs your account — email, sign-in, purchases and mock results — and we don't sell your data. See our Privacy Policy; you can request deletion at contact@keeleproov.com.
Can I use Keeleproov on my phone?
Yes — it runs in any modern browser on phone, tablet or computer. For writing practice we also suggest drafting on paper under time, since the real exam is handwritten.
Do I need an account?
Yes — the free mock needs one, because your results and progress are saved to you. An account is created with an email address, and you can delete it along with your data at any time on your profile page.
